Occupational Health Services
Eight services that carry an employee through their whole working life, from the medical before they are hired to the plan that brings them back after an injury. The complete list of what the practice does is set out further down.
Health Surveillance

In practice
What this looks like on the ground
Occupational health happens at your site as often as it happens in a consulting room.
Hearing and lung function testing
Audiometry and spirometry for workers exposed to hazardous noise, dust and fumes, with results reviewed by the physician the same day.
Talks and training on site
Awareness sessions built around the hazards your teams actually meet, from hearing conservation and ergonomics to workplace mental health.
Working with management and HR
Reviewing risk assessments, exposure data and open cases with your team, then agreeing the surveillance programme that follows from them.
Why Employers Work With Us
We partner with you to build healthier, safer workplaces and protect your greatest asset, your people. One physician, accountable end to end, who knows your site and your workforce.
Reduced Absenteeism
Fewer sick days and less disruption to your schedule.
Lower Risk
Proactive management reduces incidents and liabilities.
Better Performance
Healthier teams deliver better results, day after day.
Stronger Culture
A wellbeing-focused workplace attracts and retains talent.
Compliance Confidence
Meet legal duties and industry standards without guesswork.
Sections 77 and 78 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 2005
Where employees are exposed to specified hazardous substances, the employer may carry a statutory duty to arrange medical surveillance by an occupational health physician. We help you work out which of your roles that actually covers, and set up the surveillance to match. The point of statutory surveillance is not the paperwork; it is catching occupational disease early enough to do something about it.
How we practise
Six principles behind every assessment
These are the rules the practice works to, and the reason an employer can rely on the opinion it receives.
Prevention
Occupational medicine is preventive before it is anything else. Catching a health effect early is what stops it becoming permanent disease.
Risk-based
Examinations and investigations follow the exposure and the job demands. No routine test is ordered simply because it exists.
Evidence-based
Recommendations rest on medical evidence, clinical findings, functional capacity and what the role genuinely requires.
Independence
Occupational medical opinions are given independently and impartially, whichever party asked for the assessment.
Confidentiality
Clinical information belongs to the employee and is held to professional medical standards. The employer receives the decision, not the file.
Practical solutions
Wherever it is possible, the aim is to keep someone working safely through adjustments, restrictions or rehabilitation rather than to rule them out.
Confidentiality and independence
The employer gets the decision. The employee keeps the file.
This is the part HR managers ask about most, and it is the part that makes occupational health work. Medical confidentiality is not a courtesy in this field, it is the condition that lets an employee answer honestly, which is the only way a fitness decision can be worth anything.
Professional independence works the same way. The opinion is the same opinion whoever commissioned the assessment, which is precisely what makes it defensible if it is ever challenged.
What you receive as the employer
Whether the employee is fit for the work
Whether any restrictions are required, and for how long
Which workplace adjustments are recommended
The functional limitations you need to plan around
Whether a further occupational health review is needed
Detailed clinical information is not routinely disclosed to an employer without proper justification and the employee's consent.

About the practice
Occupational medicine, practised the way it should be
Occupational Health Services Ltd is the practice of Dr Shahil Dawreeawoo, an occupational health physician working with employers across manufacturing, construction, logistics, hospitality and the service sector, throughout Mauritius and Rodrigues.
An occupational health assessment is not an ordinary clinical consultation. It looks at two things at once: how the work and its exposures may affect the employee's health, and how the employee's health may affect their ability to do the work safely. That means weighing the medical condition, the functional capacity, the exposures and the demands of the job together.
The approach is preventive rather than reactive. Instead of signing certificates after the fact, we look at the job, the hazards and the person doing the work, then put controls in place that keep people healthy and keep the business compliant. Every engagement is handled personally, so your HR team always speaks to the same physician.
Dr Dawreeawoo also contributes to the national conversation on workplace and public health in Mauritius, from occupational exposure to leptospirosis to respiratory virus preparedness in the workplace.

Practical questions, answered
Everything an HR manager usually asks before the first call.
How do I book an appointment?
Send a WhatsApp message or an email with your company name, the service you need and roughly how many employees are involved. You get a reply with available dates and a quote. There is no online booking form to fill in and no account to create.
Do you come to our workplace?
Yes. Health surveillance, screening days, ergonomic assessments and vaccination campaigns are normally run at your site, anywhere in Mauritius and Rodrigues. Individual consultations and medical board assessments are held at the consulting room in Vacoas.
What happens during a fitness-to-work assessment?
The assessment starts from the job itself: what the role physically requires and what the person is exposed to. That is followed by a medical history, a clinical examination and any tests the role calls for, such as vision, hearing or lung function.
You receive a fitness outcome and, where relevant, the adjustments that would make the role safe. Clinical details stay confidential between the employee and the physician.
Is my employees' medical information confidential?
Yes. Medical records belong to the employee and are held under medical confidentiality. As the employer you receive the outcome you need to make a decision, fit, fit with adjustments, or temporarily unfit, and never the underlying clinical detail.
What are your fees?
Fees are quoted per engagement, because a pre-employment medical for three new hires and an annual surveillance programme for four hundred factory workers are very different pieces of work. Send through your requirement and you get a written quote, with nothing due until you accept it.
Do you help with OSH Act compliance?
Yes. We review where you stand against your duties under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 2005, identify the gaps, and set out what needs to happen and in what order. The output is a practical plan, not a compliance lecture.
